Books I Enjoyed But Rarely SQUEEE About

Chances are, if I loved a book, you will be hearing about that book whether you choose to or not.

The Screech if Love is the most powerful screech. You can’t escape it…

But what about the books in between? The books you liked but had read just before an ULTIMATE FIVE STAR RATING BOOK THAT YOU HAVE TO SQUEEEE ABOUT AT MAXIMUM VOLUME!

Some of my FIVE STAR SQUEEEE worthy books include; The Cruel Prince (The Folk of the Air Trilogy) by Holly Black, The Raven Cycle and Call Down the Hawk by Maggie Stiefvater…. as well as anything else by Maggie Stiefvater tbhSorcery of Thorns and An Enchantment of Ravens by Margaret Rogerson, The Illuminae Files and Angelfall by Susan Ee.

There are many, many more. BUT THIS POST ISN’T ABOUT THEM! THIS ONE IS FOR THE FORGOTTEN, PRECIOUS TREASURES! THE ONES I SAY I LOVE BUT DON’T SQEEE ABOUT ENOUGH!

I haven’t shown them half the love they deserve…

WHICH BRINGS US TO THIS LIIIIIIIST!!!

Which is in no particular order by the way… my favourite books are already at war for the top spot.

But the Raven Cycle sits up there smugly knowing they will remain undefeated.

It’s Ronan Lynch…. Ronan Lynch is sitting smugly while the rest of the Gangsey tells him to stop antagonising everyone.

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme by That Artsy Reader Girl in which readers come together each week to scream about either their favourite books or their TBRs (that’s basically what this is… don’t try and tell me otherwise!)

Today’s Prompt is “Books I enjoyed but don’t talk about enough!”

All book covers are linked to the books respective Goodreads pages, clicking on them will take you there!

This Mortal Coil (Book #1) by Emily Suvada

35072280. sy475

Genre: Young Adult, Science Fiction, Dystopia.

Science focused on the genetic type (people can recode their DNA via implanted technology in their arms, and it’s pretty darn cool!), Dystopian world, Hacking Queen, BIG SECRETS THAT SMACK YOU IN THE FACE! Romance 😉

Beyond a Darkened Shore (Standalone) by Jessica Leake

32295486. sy475

Genre: Young Adult, Fantasy, Mythology.

Viking inspired, Norse and Pagan Gods, Dark magic, set in Old Ireland (Éirinn), enemies to lovers romance.

Black Bird of the Gallows (Standalone) by Meg Kassel

33509076. sy475

Genre: Young Adult, Paranormal, Romance.

New boy in town is friends with crows, main protagonist gorl thinks he be cute but spooky. THE BEES ARE EVIL! STAY AWAY FROM THE BEES! MC is a popular DJ but hardly anyone knows, but we like seeing music in books, so hello! BIG DISASTER IS BIG AND DISASTROUS!

To Kill a Kingdom (Standalone) by Alexandra Christo

34499221. sy475

Genre: Young Adult, Fantasy, Retelling, Romance.

SIRENS! SIRENS WHO STEAL HEARTS AND BURY THEM IN THEIR BEDROOMS! Lira’s mama is the Sea Queen and curses her to become a Human (gross) and she can only return if she brings the heart of Prince Elian, WHO IS THE BEST BEAN! Prince Elian is a good boy who doesn’t want to be king, and hunts sirens on his pirate ship because they keep killing people but WHOOPS he fell in love with one.

The Wish Granter (Book #2, Standalone) by C.J. Redwine

30255943. sy475

Genre: Young Adult, Fantasy, Retelling, Romance.

Rumpelstiltskin is the bad guy. Very bad. And very tricksy. Ari is a reluctant Princess who things the only good thing about balls are the snacks. Sebastian is a precious boi we must protect forever (even though he’s a weapons master… so he can protect himself really). Soft romance was very soft, more of this please and thank you (but for the love of god, less of this unending pain and looming death please. Just the soft. For my heart).

I loved this one way more than Shadow Queen because it literally had me on edge. I was so STRESSED. But in a good way, Teague (Rumpelstiltskin) was a very interesting villain that I really liked.

The Darkest Part of the Forest (Standalone) by Holly Black

20875019. sy475

Genre: Young Adult, Fantasy, Romance.

FAE! We love some Fae books. And the fae are tricksy and will turn you into a rock for fun, bless. Hazel and her brother Ben, are fascinated by the Faerie Prince sleeping in a glass coffin in the middle of the woods, and he be waking up and throwing their lives into chaos. The romances were super cute too! Hazel’s was cute but I was way more invested in Ben’s tbh. SOFT BOY BEN DESERVES ALL THE LOVE! (and I was beyond thrilled that the characters appeared in The Cruel Prince briefly, and that Ben was still with his fae boyfriend. I. am. SOFT!)

Lament (Book #1) by Maggie Stiefvater

3112850

Genre: Young Adult, Fantasy, Paranormal, Romance.

MORE FAERIES! But these ones are both tricksy and dangerous. Like, they’ll lure you away and make you walk through a swamp while you think you’re running through rainbows, but they might also bite your nose off. Main Character is a musician (again, we love music here!!!!), and a harpist at that! She can also see faeries. Love interest is an assassin (of the “I have no control over my own body and I have frequent nightmares about those I kill” kind. he also really likes music. Bless.)

Eliza and Her Monsters (Standalone) by Francesca Zappia

31931941. sy475

Genre: Young Adult, Contemporary, Romance.

ART! LOTS OF ART! ART EVERYWHERE! Main character Eliza is a comic artist, and her webcomic Monstrous Sea is super popular, but her identity is anonymous. She is also incredibly anxious and introverted and I feel like Zappia wrote this so friggin well, I was not expecting to feel so seen while reading this book. The Love Interest is a writer, more specifically he is super popular online for his fan fiction. That is, fan fiction he writes of Monstrous Sea.

Snow Like Ashes (Book #1) by Sara Raasch

17399160

Genre: Young Adult, Fantasy, Romance.

I love this whole trilogy actually. But I rarely speak about it?

The four Seasons are Kingdoms! And Spring is bad. Very bad. The books follow a handful of Winterians whose Kingdom has been destroyed and their people enslaved (see above… Spring bad), and they want them and their Kingdom back. Our MC is Meira who was raised by a Winter General and who wants so desperately to help fight back against the bad guys so that her friend (and long time crush) Mather, can sit on the throne of Winter.

It’s been a while since I read these but my gosh do I remember the LooooooooVE! (Both the one I feel FOR this book and the one IN the book [Meira and Mather for the WIN!])

Rebel of the Sands (Book #1) by Alwyn Hamilton

24934065. sy475

Genre: Young Adult, Fantasy, Romance.

Desert! Djinn! I keep buying books whenever someone says it has Djinn. I can’t help it. It’s not my fault.

Rebel of the Sands, as its title suggests, is set in a desert! We love a desert setting, but even better. Gunslinging. Gunslinging in the desert. Our MC Amani is a Gunslinger, a very good one, and in an attempt to run away from her home, Dustwalk, to escape being married off or dead, she enters a competition that would get her enough money to do so. At this competition she meets a foreigner, who goes by Jin, who is apparently also good at shooting.

And so, he becomes her escape. But also drags her into a lot of trouble. Big trouble. Like, rebellion kind of trouble.

I love this one, I need to reread. An adventure across the sand, a little DASH of romance and some epic magic is all I need, thank you.

Let's Chat

I like how I went from writing what you would find in the book, to basically writing a mini review/summary for each book. I don’t even know how I changed without realising?

What books have you enjoyed but don’t squeal about often enough?? And what books do you scream about most often?? Have you read any on my list?? What did you think??

I hope you are all safe and healthy! ❤

  1. Hmm. For some reason … I’m getting a faint message coming through. Getting stronger. Weird. Something is telling me I should really go read The Raven Cycle. Huh. Talk about TOTALLY SUBLIMINAL AND NOT IN YOUR FACE messaging. xD (But no, really, I need to go read it, and I have no reason I haven’t yet except that I’m lame and you haven’t watched Naruto, so stop judging me).

Uh, helloooo. Beyond A Darkened Shore is going to be a YES for me. How have I not heard about that one before? That one’s going right on the list.

Black Bird of the Gallows was fantastic! Did you read Keeper of the Bees? Because if you haven’t … you totally should! It was a different perspective, and I so appreciated the nuance and I just loved it.

I loved the Rebel of the Sands series, too! I don’t think it’s *quite* been long enough where I need a reread just yet, but there will come a time. Everything about it was just fabulous.

    1. It’s a ghost Sammie. They want you to read The Raven Cycle as soon as possible… it’s me. I’m the ghost. I’m upset that you haven’t read my ALL TIME FAVOURITE BOOKS! (my cause of death was the shame at having not watched naruto… I’ve watched a lot of anime – a lot of Popular Anime too. But not Naruto. *shameeeeee*)

SCRIBBLE IT RIGHT ON THE LIST! I WANT TO READ THE COMPANION NOVEL BECAUSE I LOVED BEYOND A DARKENED SHORE SO MUCH. The companion novel though Sammie, get this. From what I know it’s got the same, ~people are going to kill us for some reason~ thing BUT The 2 love interests… One has magic that revolves around Ice and the other…. ready? FIRE! IT’S ONE OF THOSE OPPOSITES ATTRACT NOVELS WHERE THE MC’S HAVE DIFFERENT POWERS BUT GET ALONG! *is ashamed that it has been on my list for a year at least without me ever reading it. Only staring at it longingly thinking “someday” WHEN IS THAT DAY?!?*

AAAAAAAAAAAAAA! BLACK BIRD OF THE GALLOWS!!! I have Keeper of the Bees! I got it for Christmas (somehow managed to convince my mum to buy my ONE book, so clearly I am an all powerful wizard now)! BUT I STILL NEED TO READ IT! I’m reading a contemporary right now, but I want to read Keeper so baaaaaaad. I’ll pick it up next and scream at you about it!

That’s it. Everyone is giving love to the Rebel of the Sands series. I read up to book 2 and never read the last one *more shame to add to the list* but I do really want to know what happens! So I’m adding that to the list of “UP AND COMING BOOKS I’M GOING TO READ”
I actually set a TBR for each month buuuut I’m getting distracted! XD

      1. You know … shame. Shame on you and your cow. I’ll leave flowers at your grave, though. And if you look reeeeally carefully, they’ll spell out WATCH NARUTO. xD I will read The Raven Cycle, though. I mean, everyone seems to love it. Who am I to argue with that?

Oh gosh, I’m so trash for the whole opposite powers attract thing. You know the movie Sky High? I squeed when the fire dude met the ice girl at the end. Yeeees. it makes me heart happy when opposites attract and balance each other out haha.

That’s a good one book to choose. I hope you enjoy it! I loved what it did with the world. It felt much bigger and just … aaaahhhh I don’t want to say too much, just READ IT. It was better than the first.

Oooh, good! Yes, you definitely need to finish that series. The third book was just …. ahhhhhhh. Everything happens. I don’t even know. And the ending? *chef’s kiss* Fit the story just perfectly without leaving me wanting more. I mean, OF COURSE I want more, but I have to begrudgingly admit that it was a good way to round it off.

        1. I’m adding Naruto to the list of anime for me to watch immediately. If not, I’ll have one installed in my coffin so I can watch it in there!
I LOVED THE RAVEN CYCLE! It’s such a perfect blend of spooky and fun but also… spooky. Big love!

*whispers* Is it also a crime that I haven’t watched Sky High?? But I’m planning to watch some Netflix later so I’ll see if it’s available on there! AND THEN I SHALL WATCH IT AND SQUEEEEE!

  2. I love so many of the books on this list! We must have similar reading tastes 😍 Beyond a Darkened Shore is so so good and it deserves more love! TO KILL A KINGDOM IS LITERALLY ONE OF MY FAVORITE BOOKS EVER AND I’M SO GLAD YOU LOVED IT TOO!!!! ❤❤❤ Great list!

    1. YEEEEES! THESE BOOKS WERE ALL AMAZING! I’M SO GLAD YOU LOVED THEM TOO! I agree that Beyond a Darkened Shore needs to be on more peoples’ radars, like it has everything you could ever want all in one book! I LOVED TO KILL A KINGDOM SO MUCH AND I REALLY WANT TO READ MORE ABOUT LIRA AND ELIAN!! I MISS THEM SO MUCH!😭

  3. “Viking inspired, Norse and Pagan Gods, Dark magic, set in Old Ireland (Éirinn), enemies to lovers romance.”

I’m like, sold lol. That all sounds fabulous.

And I NEED to read Holly Black. I’ve heard her fae worlds are amazing.

Oh, I loved Lament, too!! That entire series is underrated. But I’m also a big Maggie fan, so I may be biased. And the fact that the main character’s name is the closest I’ve ever come across to my own in a book. 😉

  5. I loved Eliza and Her Monsters as well, but I rarely talk about it either! It deserves more love.
A few of these books are on my TBR as well. Snow Like Ashes and Lament (because Maggie Stiefvater!)
I didn’t love To Kill a Kingdom unfortunately, but I’m glad that you did!
As for books I love screaming about… The Stormlight Archive by Brandon Sanderson, The Raven Cycle by Maggie Stiefvater, and The Monsters of Verity by Victoria Schwab, to name a few.

    1. Eliza and Her Monsters deserves allll the love! Those comic pages of Monstrous Sea in between chapters were so precious! ❤

Lament has that typical Maggie Stiefvater "I don't know whether to be in awe of this magic or deeply afraid" vibe. I loved it! ❤

YEEEEES! I could scream about The Raven Cycle aaaaaaall day! Those books have the number one spot on my "List of Favourite Books of All Time!" list. And I don't think they're budging any time soon! XD

The Stormlight Archive and The Monsters of Verity are both on my TBR! 🙈 I really want to read some Victoria Schwab, because I hear such great things and I have some of her books, but I haven't read any yet! 🙈

    1. I highly recommend it!! When I read it, I was in one of those reading moods where you want to read something but you don’t know what. So I picked up To Kill a Kingdom and absolutely loved it! It’s such a fast read, and so enjoyable! ❤
I also have one too many books that I want to read and keep saying I'll read next but – oops what book was it again?? 🙈

    1. I’m always super quick to read anything any of my fellow bloggers squeal about! I trust their reading tastes wholeheartedly, but also on that note, how many books have my fellow bloggers enjoyed but not talked about?? HOW MANY GOOD BOOKS ARE WE MISSING OUT ON BECAUSE WE ALL FORGET TO RECOMMEND THEM TO EACH OTHER?? 🙈

  6. Ohh such an interesting list you got here!!
I recently got a copy of Black bird of the Gallows because it was free on amazon and looked really interesting. Glad to see you enjoyed it. To kill a kingdom is one I really loved as well. Beyond a darkened Shore is on my wishlist. Really curious about it. The wish granter looks interesting as well. I’ve only read the first book in this re-telling series which I thought was a fun read. I’m really behind on buying and reading the rest of the books but that’s definitely something I’m planning to do. Eliza was a great I think as well and snow like ashes was one I enjoyed too. Still have to read the third installment in the trilogy. Rebel of the sands trilogy is one of my favorite underrated ya series. Loved these books a lot and it only got better with each new installment I think.

BLACK BIRD OF THE GALLOWS IS AMAZING! What's also amazing is that it was free! 😮
Beyond a Darkened Shore was really good, I'm planning to read its companion novel soon! (same world different characters, but apparently the characters from BADS make an appearance!!)
It took me so long to finally read the ending of the Snow like Ashes trilogy, because I bought and read the first two basically immediately when they released. But with the 3rd book I wasn't looking for it? But when I found it I bought it immediately, but by then it had been so long since I had read the other books that I had to reread them all! XD
I still need to read Hero at the Fall, but I hope to get to it this year sometime. I'm going to make room in my reading schedule to read the whole trilogy from start to finish because I'm a little blurry on the details of the first 2 books. 😭

      1. It’s always a good thing to do a re-read before a next installment is going to be read imo. And especially when we’re talking about the Alwyn Hamilton books. I’m really curious what you’ll think of the next book if/when you get around to read it!! Talking about it makes me want to do a re-read right away haha.

        Liked by 1 person

    1. Wasn’t it amazing?!? I loved it because it was a Standalone, and that the story was written so well within such a small number of pages, but I kinda wish there were more books with Elian and Lira in. 😭
Thank You! ❤ I hope you enjoy the new books!!
